Top 10 Costly or Frequent Painting Mistakes
- Skipping or using cheap/bad primer
Dark colors bleed through, new drywall flashes, tannins bleed from wood, stains reappear.
Fix: Always prime new drywall, patches, wood knots, smoke/water stains, and drastic color changes
with the correct primer (PVA, 123, oil-based, shellac, etc.).
- Not prepping properly (or at all)
Painting over dirt, grease, loose paint, glossy surfaces, or mildew = peeling in months.
Worst offenders: kitchens, bathrooms, exteriors, and glossy trim painted with latex without
sanding/deglossing.
- Poor or no patching & sanding
Nail holes, dents, and bad seams telegraph through the finish coat.
Pro tip: Sand patches smooth with 120–150 grit and spot-prime them.
- Cutting corners on protection & masking
Paint splatter on floors, countertops, hardwood, or furniture = angry customers and expensive repairs.
Cheap blue tape bleeding and skipping plastic and drop cloths are common culprits.
- Painting in bad conditions
Too cold (<50 °F), too hot (>90 °F), high humidity, or direct sun = lap marks, poor adhesion,
blistering, wrinkling.
Latex paint especially hates cold and humidity.
- Wrong sheen in the wrong place
Flat paint in kitchens/bathrooms/kids’ rooms = impossible to clean.
High gloss or semi-gloss on imperfect walls = every flaw magnified.
- Over-thinning paint or wrong roller nap
Thinning too much = runs and poor hide.
⅜″ nap on textured walls = streaks; ¾″+ nap on smooth drywall = orange-peel.
- Not back-rolling after spraying
Spraying without immediate back-rolling = pinholes, poor adhesion, and future mildew (especially on
stucco/porous siding).
- Bad color choices or no real-life sampling
Picking from tiny chips or screens = “it looked beige online, now it’s peach!”
Always test sample quarts on 3×3 ft boards and view at different times of day.
- Rushing between coats / insufficient dry time
Second coat too soon = wrinkling, pulling, lifting.
Moving furniture or hanging pictures too early = dents and gouges.
