Top Tips for Painting
A high-quality, professional paint job is 90% preparation. Follow these tips to ensure a flawless finish across
the
three critical phases.
1. 🛠️ Preparation: The Most Important Step
2. 🎨 Technique: Applying the Paint
- Box Your Paint: If using multiple cans of the same color, pour all cans into a larger
5-gallon
bucket and stir well. This ensures **color consistency** across your entire job.
- Prime Strategically: Prime when painting over new drywall/spackle, making a drastic color
change, or covering stains. Ask your paint store to **tint the primer** toward your final color.
- Paint Order (Top-Down): Always start high and work down: **Ceilings** $\rightarrow$
**Walls**
$\rightarrow$ **Trim, Molding, and Baseboards**.
- Cut In First: Use a brush to paint the edges where the walls meet the ceiling, trim, and
corners. **Keep a Wet Edge:** Cut in a small section, and then immediately roll the main wall surface while
the
cut-in paint is still wet to ensure blending.
- The "W" Rolling Technique: Apply paint with the roller in a large "W" or "M" pattern, then
fill
in the empty spaces by rolling vertically. **Do not over-press** the roller.
- Use Quality Tools: Invest in an angled sash brush for cutting in and a quality roller cover
with the correct **nap thickness** (e.g., 3/8" for smooth drywall).
3. ✨ Finishing: Clean Lines and Touch-Ups
- Pull Tape While Wet: For the sharpest lines, pull the painter's tape off **immediately**
after
applying the final coat of paint, while it is still wet. Pull at a 45-degree angle. (If the paint is dry,
score
the line first with a utility knife.)
- Allow Full Cure Time: While the paint is dry to the touch in hours, it can take **1 to 4
weeks
to fully cure** (harden). Avoid washing or scrubbing the walls during this period.
- Store Leftover Paint: Store leftover paint in smaller, sealed containers. Store cans
**upside
down** to create a better air seal at the lid.
- Touch-Up Pen: Keep a small amount of your final paint color in a dedicated **touch-up pen**
or
small sealed jar for quick, easy repairs later.
